Biography
John Tylor Mapes was an American character actor, stuntman and body double who worked extensively in film and television. He was born on 25 November 1901 in St. Edward, Nebraska, and moved to Los Angeles in his mid‑twenties. In 1929 he began working as a grip before shifting to stunt work and acting, and he later doubled for actors such as Jimmy Stewart and Gary Cooper. Over a forty‑year career he appeared in hundreds of films and television programs in various capacities. After retiring from acting in 1969, Mapes focused on animal safety in the film industry, serving as an observer for the American Humane Association on movie sets.
