Biography

Tommy Vance was an English radio broadcaster who played a significant role in promoting the new wave of British heavy metal during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Working with London‑based DJ Neal Kay, he helped bring the genre into mainstream awareness. Vance was among the first UK presenters to regularly feature hard rock and heavy metal on radio, providing national exposure for both emerging and established bands. His programme, *The Friday Rock Show*, served as a key outlet for new music, enabling listeners to discover and engage with the style. Recognised for his catchphrase “TV on the radio,” Vance’s distinctive voice reached millions worldwide, including his announcements at Live Aid in 1985 at Wembley Stadium.
