Biography

Tonatiuh is an Aztec sun deity associated with the daytime sky and the cardinal direction of east. In Aztec mythology, he is known as "The Fifth Sun" and is linked to the calendar name "naui olin," meaning "4 Movement." Depicted as a fierce and warlike god, Tonatiuh appears in Early Postclassic Toltec art and is symbolically connected to the eagle, representing his journey across the sky. According to belief, his daily passage from east to west was sustained by human sacrifice. His Nahuatl name translates to "He Who Goes Forth Shining" or "He Who Makes The Day." Though once thought to be the central deity on the Aztec calendar stone, this identification is no longer accepted. In Toltec culture, Tonatiuh is often associated with Quetzalcoatl, particularly in his morning star aspect of the planet Venus.
