Biography
Victor Fleming began his career in the film industry as a stuntman in 1910, specializing in stunt driving, a skill he brought from his background as a mechanic and professional race-car driver. He soon transitioned to working behind the camera and became a cameraman on many of Douglas Fairbanks' films. He later moved into directing, with his first major success being *The Virginian* (1929), a film that launched Gary Cooper's stardom. Cooper and Fleming maintained a lifelong friendship. Fleming's reputation grew throughout the 1930s, during which he directed several films later regarded as classics, including *Red Dust* (1932), *Bombshell* (1933), *Treasure Island* (1934), and two of his most notable works: *Gone with the Wind* (1939) and *The Wizard of Oz* (1939). In both cases, Fleming was brought in to replace previous directors and resolve production issues, which he managed effectively. His career declined somewhat in the 1940s, with most of his films, aside from *Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde* (1941), failing to achieve success. His final film, *Joan of Arc* (1948), was a critical and commercial failure.
