Biography

Viveca Lindfors (1920‑1995) was a Swedish‑American actress who worked in stage, film and television. She was born in Uppsala, Sweden, and trained at the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.

In 1946 Warner Brothers brought Lindfors to Hollywood with the expectation that she might become a new Greta Garbo or Ingrid Bergman. Her international career then extended over several decades, and she appeared in films such as the noir *I’ll Cry Tomorrow* and the psychological thriller *The Addams Family*.

Lindfors also performed on stage, receiving notice for roles including Hedda Gabler and Medea, and was recognized for her ability to convey nuance in demanding parts. She taught acting at institutions that included the Actors Studio in New York, mentoring aspiring actors and directors.

Among her awards were a Primetime Emmy Award for the television film *Testimony of Two Men* and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Swedish Film Institute.
