Biography
William Garfield Greaves was an American filmmaker and actor who became a pioneering documentarian during the height of the civil rights movement. Initially trained at the Actors Studio and active in stage and film, he grew disillusioned with the limited roles available to Black performers and shifted his focus to documentary filmmaking. Over his career, Greaves produced more than 200 documentaries, writing and directing the majority of them. His work earned him significant recognition, including four Emmy nominations, and he is celebrated for his contributions to both cinema and social justice.
