Amachan

Amachan is the 88th 2013 NHK asadora written by Kankuro Kudo (Tiger and Dragon, Unobore Deka). It follows Amano Aki (Nounen Rena), a 16-year-old girl from Tokyo who spends her summer break in Sodegahama, a fishing village in Kitasanriku, Iwate Prefecture, her mother's former home. Aki falls in love with the sea and the local community, deciding to stay and become an Ama, a woman diver who collects clams and sea urchins for tourists, following in the footsteps of her grandmother, Natsu (Miyamoto Nobuko). Natsu and the villagers warmly welcome Aki's decision. However, Aki's mother, Haruko (Koizumi Kyoko), initially opposes the idea. Haruko has a tense relationship with Natsu, and her deep dislike of the sea, diving, and rural life is part of the reason she left Sodegahama 24 years ago. Eventually, Haruko decides to stay in Sodegahama with Aki, partly because she is considering a divorce and does not want to return to her husband in Tokyo. She also observes that Aki seems more lively and content in Kitasanriku than in Tokyo. Aki faces many challenges as she works toward becoming a full-fledged Ama-san. One day, a video of her diving is uploaded to the city's tourism website, making her an overnight Internet sensation and an unexpected ambassador for a town struggling with depopulation.
