Kouichi Sakakibara arrives in Yomiyama and is soon hospitalized due to a collapsed lung. A month later, he enrolls at the local middle school and reconnects with a reserved girl he had met during his hospital stay, who is wearing an eye patch.

As Kouichi grows closer to Mei, he begins to seek her out more often, though he struggles to connect with her as her responses become increasingly cryptic. With Mei's behavior growing more enigmatic, Kouichi and their classmates start to question the true nature of their relationship.

Mei tells Kouichi the story of three students who died under mysterious circumstances 26 years ago in a studio filled with old dolls. As Kouichi attempts to gather information from his classmates, his aunt Reiko offers to provide further details.
