Baki Hanma battles a gang of 100 hired fighters in a test of his strength, after which Detective Kido and his partner escort him home. As Baki reflects on ways to improve his skills, Kuriyagawa, the man who orchestrated the fight, meets with the gang's leader to settle payment. Meanwhile, Baki observes an intense sparring match between boxing champion Yuri Chakovsky and Muay Thai champion Dinoy.

Baki engages in a practice match with Yuri, while Kuriyagawa arranges a fight between Baki and Kaoru Hanayama, a feared gangster and skilled brawler.

Baki visits his friend Reiichi Ando in the forest and resides with him, incorporating some of Ando's training methods into his own regimen. He later ventures to Yasha Rock to camp alone, seeking an encounter with the elusive Yasha Ape.

The third and fourth A-Block matches of round one feature a heavyweight kickboxing champion facing a professional wrestler and a *motobe* fighter challenging a grand sumo, while the first and second B-Block matches pit a Sambo expert against a Chinese Kenpo master and a fighter against the son of the Yasha Ape.
