Two spaceships, one crewed by the benevolent Maximals and the other by the antagonistic Predacons, crash-land on a pre-humanoid planet en route to Earth. To survive the planet's intense natural energy, their crews take on the forms of indigenous animals, transforming into robots to engage in combat. Thus, the Beast Wars begin.
