Fifty miles off the coast of Nantucket, 250 feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean, lies the RMS Republic and what some believe to be her hidden treasure. A White Star Line steamship, Republic began her service three years before the Titanic and, like her sister ship, met a tragic end at sea. Following her sinking, rumors emerged about a valuable cargo aboard the vessel, but the ship's secrets have remained buried for over a century. Martin Bayerle, a lifelong treasure hunter, has spent the past 35 years investigating the Republic and seeking evidence of a reported cargo of 150,000 American Eagle gold coins—an estimated worth of one billion dollars in today's value. Bayerle previously led an expedition in 1987 to recover the gold, but the search proved unsuccessful after the team explored the wrong section of the wreck. The failed mission left him financially ruined, involved in legal disputes, separated from his wife, and eventually led to his imprisonment. Despite these setbacks, his determination to uncover the Republic's treasure only intensified. Now, with the assistance of his estranged son, Grant, Martin is returning to the wreck for what he hopes will be a successful recovery. Using three decades of new research, he believes he has pinpointed the exact location of the gold. Together with a team of salvage divers, Martin and Grant plan to descend into the deep, dark, and perilous waters where the Republic has rested for over a hundred years.
