Marilyn Monroe was an American actress and model who became one of the most iconic figures in Hollywood during the 1950s. Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, she was raised in a series of foster homes and orphanages before being placed under the guardianship of her mother, Gladys Baker, who struggled with mental health issues. Monroe began her career as a model, and her striking appearance led to her being signed by 20th Century Fox in 1946 under the name Marilyn Monroe. Her film career took off with roles in comedies such as *All About Eve* (1950), *Gentlemen Prefer Blondes* (1953), and *The Seven Year Itch* (1955), in which her "blonde bombshell" persona became a cultural phenomenon. In real life, Monroe was known for her struggles with the pressures of fame, her turbulent personal relationships, and her battles with mental health and substance abuse. She married three times, including to baseball legend Joe DiMaggio and playwright Arthur Miller. Monroe's life was also marked by a series of public scandals, government investigations, and a controversial death by overdose in 1962 at the age of 36. While fictional portrayals often dramatize her life, they frequently incorporate real events such as her rise to stardom, her marriages, and the circumstances surrounding her death.
