Blue's Clues is an American children's television show that first aired on September 8, 1996, on the cable network Nickelodeon, and continued for ten years until its final episode on August 6, 2006. The show was created by Angela Santomero, Todd Kessler, and Traci Paige Johnson, who integrated concepts from child development and early-childhood education with innovative animation and production techniques to help young viewers learn. The original host was Steve Burns, who left the show in 2002 to pursue a music career, and was succeeded by Donovan Patton. Burns played a key role in the show's success, and the speculation surrounding his departure highlighted the show's growing cultural impact. Blue's Clues became the highest-rated preschool show on American commercial television and played a major role in Nickelodeon's expansion. It has been described as "one of the most successful, critically acclaimed, and ground-breaking preschool television series of all time." A spin-off titled Blue's Room premiered in 2004. The show's creators presented content in a narrative format rather than the traditional magazine-style format, used repetition to reinforce educational themes, and structured each episode consistently. They drew on three decades of research into child development and viewing habits, particularly in the wake of Sesame Street's debut in the U.S. Blue's Clues redefined the genre by actively involving its audience. Research was an integral part of the creative and decision-making process throughout production. The show was the first cutout animation series for preschoolers, with a visual style resembling a storybook through its use of primary colors and simple, colorful construction paper shapes of familiar objects. Its home-based setting was relatable to American children yet visually distinct from other children's programming. A live stage production of Blue's Clues, incorporating many of the show's production techniques, toured the U.S. beginning in 1999. By 2002, over 2 million people had attended more than 1,000 performances.
