Blue Thunder is a 1984 ABC television series based on the 1983 movie of the same title, which features the Blue Thunder helicopter. The series utilizes a converted Aérospatiale Gazelle helicopter and incorporates significant amounts of stock footage from the original film. A ground unit called "Rolling Thunder" supports the helicopter in the series; it is a large support van equipped with a desert camouflage off-road vehicle stored inside. The television series stars James Farentino, Dana Carvey, and former professional American football players Bubba Smith and Dick Butkus. ABC canceled the series after determining that the similarly themed CBS show Airwolf was expected to win the ratings. Additionally, Blue Thunder aired at the same time as the CBS soap opera Dallas on Friday nights and was outperformed by it. Eleven episodes were produced before the cancellation.
