Bolek and Lolek

Bolek and Lolek are two Polish cartoon characters from the animated TV series of the same name. The characters were based on the sons of Władysław Nehrebecki, Jan and Roman, and were initially conceived by German-born Alfred Ledwig before being further developed by Władysław Nehrebecki and Leszek Lorek. The series follows the adventures of two young brothers, often involving outdoor activities and humorous situations. The characters first appeared in an animated film in 1963. The names Bolek and Lolek are diminutives of Bolesław and Karol. The cartoon was distributed in English under the titles Jym & Jam and Bennie and Lennie. Some episodes were broadcast as part of Nickelodeon's Pinwheel. In 1973, at the request of the female audience, the creators introduced a female character named Tola. She first appeared in the episode titled "Tola" and appeared in a total of 30 episodes. Most episodes are silent, though exceptions include feature-length films and the 1980s series, in which the main characters' voices were provided by: Bolek – Ewa Złotowska, Ilona Kuśmierska; Lolek – Danuta Mancewicz, Danuta Przesmycka. During the period of the People's Republic of Poland, Bolek and Lolek were widely reproduced in various forms of merchandise, including action figures, postcards, puzzles, and arcade games, many of which are on display at the Dobranocki Museum of the PRL. The characters also appear in computer programs, coloring books, picture books, and games.
