Major Les Hiddins of the Australian Army was born in Queensland and had a long-standing interest in Aboriginal customs and practices, particularly how these helped people survive in a harsh environment for thousands of years. After joining the Army, he developed this interest into a practical skill, using it to learn how to survive in the Australian bush and to teach others the same techniques. He authored several survival manuals for the Australian Armed Forces and included survival notes on the back of maps used by pilots flying over the Australian bush. In this series of programs, Les shares his knowledge, demonstrating some of his survival skills and expressing his deep respect for the Aboriginal people who taught him.
