In 1850, Captain Charles Boone inherits a fortune and moves his family to a remote Maine town, where they face local resentment, a mysterious illness, and a murder, prompting Charles to confront personal and moral challenges.

A child in the town dies from an unexplained illness and accuses Stephen Boone on her deathbed, sparking fear and anger among the residents, who pressure Charles to exhume his cousin's grave. Charles publicly refuses, but secretly opens the grave and is startled by the discovery.
