Chelmsford 123 is a British television situation comedy produced by Hat Trick Productions for Channel 4. It aired in two series, consisting of six and seven episodes, in 1988 and 1990 respectively. The show is set in the British town of Chelmsford, reimagined as it would have been in the year AD 123, and follows the power struggle between Roman governor Aulus Paulinus and the British chieftain Badvoc. Britain is depicted as a cold and wet place, making it a suitable exile for Aulus, who was banished there for accidentally insulting the Emperor's horse. Aulus, likely a reference to Aulus Platorius Nepos, the actual governor of Roman Britain from 122 to 125, is a delicate Roman who is frequently outwitted by Badvoc, who has not had a haircut in twenty-five years. Several regular Hat Trick actors, previously seen in Who Dares Wins, also appear in the series. Both series are available on 4 on Demand and SeeSaw. Series 1 and 2 were released on DVD by Acorn Media UK on 15 September 2011.
