Children of the Dust

Gypsy Smith is a gunfighter and bounty hunter who leads a U.S. Army unit into a Cheyenne camp to capture a suspected renegade, setting off a chain of events that culminates in a deadly confrontation. On that day, White Wolf, a child, is one of the few survivors of his tribe's massacre. Gypsy takes him in and brings him to live with the Maxwell family, where he grows up caught between two worlds—not fully Indian and not entirely white, but developing a close bond with Rachel, the Maxwell's daughter. Years later, Gypsy reappears, guiding a group of Black settlers from the post-Civil War South to establish a new life in Freedom, Oklahoma Territory—the first Black settlement in the region. Meanwhile, White Wolf, now known as Corby and living among his people, finds himself drawn back into the conflicts of the past. The various threads of the story converge in a struggle marked by conflict, violence, loss, and a hard-won but costly victory.
