Darker than Black

Li Shanshun, a Chinese student in Japan, meets Haraguchi shortly after moving into his new apartment. He encounters her multiple times, eventually saving her from dangerous situations, including a kidnapping attempt by a mysterious figure known as a Contractor. After being severely injured and seemingly killed during a confrontation, questions arise about whether Li is truly dead or hiding a deeper secret.

Li and Haraguchi, later revealed to be Chiaki Shinoda, attempt to evade Alan and the other Contractors. Chiaki offers Li information obtained from Rui, but as Li departs with it, he is ambushed by Alan and the Contractors, putting his survival in jeopardy.

Following the gate's arrival, a team is sent to investigate, but only one member returns alive. Tahara, now isolated, tends to a mysterious flower he brought back, but his solitude is soon disrupted when others take interest in his research. Hei and her team must act quickly to retrieve the information before it falls into the wrong hands.

Tahara's daughter, a contractor struggling to control her powers, is kidnapped by a group demanding Tahara's research in exchange for her safety. As tensions rise, Hei becomes involved, complicating the situation and raising questions about whether Mai can be rescued.

A group of Contractors, known as MI-6, captures Havoc, a once-powerful Contractor who has since lost her abilities, and transports her to Tokyo for experimentation by the Pandora Institute. Misaki encounters Jack Simon, also known as November 11, and during their journey, she discovers that the woman taken on the helicopter is not the real Havoc, raising questions about the true identity and past of the missing Contractor.

Havoc is questioned by Hei about the location of Amber and Hei's missing sister, Pai, but she has no useful information. Determined to assist, Havoc approaches the Gate in an attempt to restore Hei's memories and powers, but the experience instead drives her toward a desire for self-destruction. As MI6 agents close in, her fate remains uncertain.

Gai and Kiko are hired by a widow to locate her missing black cat, leading them to cross paths with Hei, who is investigating a Contractor targeting clients of the same company. During their search, Gai discovers the skeleton of a woman who had died some time earlier.

Gai investigates Toshiko's murder and is attacked by a mind-switching contractor seeking to reclaim his jacket. Mao tries to steal the jacket by switching bodies with a crow but fails and reverts to his cat form. With the contractor now aware of Mao's identity, his life is in danger, and Gai must race to save him.

Misaki reunites with her former high school classmate Alice at her birthday party in Hong Kong. Unbeknownst to Misaki, Alice is the daughter of mafia boss Chen Long Tang, and her contractor bodyguard, Wei Zhi Jung, has been involved in the deaths of several mafia members. Saitou and Hei also attend the party, complicating the situation.

Hei and Misaki narrowly escape from Alice, parting ways with Saitou before Hei steals a crystal from a stone flower garden. He is confronted by Wei, who recovers the crystal and later rejoins Misaki and Saitou, who have located Alice. After Wei kills Alice, he turns his attention to Misaki and Hei.

Hei is tasked with retrieving a valuable meteor fragment from PANDORA headquarters after an explosion occurs, and he meets Corinna Moku and Meena Kandaswamy, who may assist or complicate his mission. As he works to locate the fragment without revealing his Contractor status, a sudden death at the facility threatens to compromise his cover.

Nick and a team of researchers enter a restricted area of the Gate to recover a suspected meteor fragment, but the mission ends in disaster with the deaths of all but Nick. Hei later discovers that Nick is also a contractor with similar abilities and in possession of the meteor fragment, leading to a confrontation and a fight between the two.

Hei, Yin, and Mao are attacked by a group of hired mercenaries, forcing them to fight for their survival. When Yin disappears, Hei and Mao set out to find her before their enemies do, but the situation becomes more complicated when Yin's former piano teacher enlists Gai and Kiko to locate her. A tense race ensues to find Yin before it's too late.

Kastenin, Gai, and Kiko return Yin to her hometown, unaware that Hei has been ordered to kill her and now knows her location. However, former contractors still seeking Yin complicate his mission, forcing Hei to navigate both external threats and his own moral dilemma. As the race to reach Yin intensifies, Hei must decide whether to carry out his order or allow others to determine her fate.

A mysterious solar phenomenon known as the Great Dark Spot is about to appear, reminiscent of a previous event linked to the disappearance of a gate in South America. Meanwhile, a boy is setting off explosions across the city, and tensions rise as Hei and November 11 both search for the same girl—Amber to Hei and February to November 11.

The Stargazer provides cryptic details about the Evening Primrose, prompting further investigation. November 11 confronts Maki in a decisive battle as Hei arrives to find Amber holding Yin captive. Just as the situation reaches a critical point, Misaki appears and, using Amber's contract, they all manage to escape.

Hei encounters Sakurai Kenji, a bumbling but driven member of the Nakazawa Group, and new neighbors from his apartment building are introduced. Kenji is tasked by his boss to care for a doll, which becomes the focus of a search by Hei, Mao, Yin, and Huang.

Kenji becomes infatuated with a mysterious doll and, with Hei's assistance, attempts to flee with it. During a shopping trip, Hei is almost recognized by Kirihara Misaki as BK201, though she fails to connect Li Shunsheng to the alias. After Kenji is captured and nearly killed by the boss—his own brother—Hei intervenes, enabling Kenji and the doll to escape successfully.

Hei is tasked with infiltrating a religious group to assassinate its leader, Alma, who is referred to as the Prophet. He receives assistance from Shihoko, an insider and fellow Contractor, whose connection to Huang becomes significant. Meanwhile, Amagiri and Alma seem to be collaborating, and a miscalculation by Huang results in Shihoko being captured.

Huang is ordered to kill Shihoko, with Mao and Hei given secret orders to kill both Huang and Shihoko, along with Alma, if he fails. A flashback reveals Huang's growing affection for Shihoko, her role in the death of his former police partner, and his subsequent recruitment into the Syndicate. Unable to carry out the kill, Huang asks Hei to end their lives, but Shihoko ultimately sacrifices herself to Huang out of love when she realizes escape is impossible.

A doctor is taken by EPR agents as Hei and his team attack the American embassy in Tokyo. A teleporting contractor emerges as an EPR double agent, while Wei Zhi Jung returns, visibly scarred from a prior confrontation with Hei. Misaki is detained by PANDORA upon entering the embassy, Mao is found by Amber, and November 11 transfers from M16 to the EPR.

Mao is brought to the EPR headquarters by Amber, where she convenes a meeting with all EPR contractors, including Mao and the Doctor, to disclose a plot to destroy the South American gate and eliminate contractors worldwide, a plan disrupted by an unknown blue light. Meanwhile, November 11 confronts and kills the head of East Asian MI6 operations, who is revealed to be part of the Syndicate. Hei launches an attack on the EPR to rescue Mao, using his powers against Amber as she activates her meteor shard, causing the entire building to glow with blue light.

Eric Nishijima employs a particle accelerator to eliminate a group of contractors, prompting Amber to recruit more contractors and dolls for an unspecified purpose. Nishijima, linked to the Syndicate, arranges for Hei and his team to be eliminated. Amber sends Hei a message through Wei to meet at Hell's Gate, leading Hei and his team, with Wei's help, to plan an infiltration.

Hei's team is expelled from the syndicate and placed under contract by Eric Nishijima, forcing them into a dangerous escape. Misaki learns the syndicate is a covert international intelligence collaboration of which she was unaware. As Hei, Yin, and Mao infiltrate Hell's Gate, Mao is severed from the syndicate's network and reverts to his feral state, while Huang sacrifices himself to distract their pursuers.

Hei discovers through his encounter with Amber that Contractors may possess the potential for greater humanity than previously believed, prompting him to confront his identity and the role he plays between Contractors and humans. After saying goodbye to his former allies within the Gate, Hei makes a pivotal decision that will shape the future for both worlds.

Suou, an Eurasian girl, witnesses a meteor shower with her twin brother Shion and their father, but their night takes a dangerous turn when a meteor crashes nearby. Two years later, Shion has become a contractor and is paralyzed, confined to their family home while their father, Dr. Pavlichenko, researches his condition and forbids Suou from contacting him. As life settles into a routine, Suou's best friend Tania becomes a contractor and attacks her boyfriend, while Hei (BK-201) and April return to Russia, the former to evade an FSB capture attempt and the latter to secure Shion.

Kirihara uncovers a startling truth about BK201's identity during her relentless investigation, but as Tokyo faces imminent destruction, all parties turn their focus to the climactic final battle.

Hei and Suo attempt to escape Russia, but their journey is obstructed by Contractors and armed soldiers. As the situation becomes increasingly dangerous, Suo begins to experience a startling physical transformation.

Suo trains in combat in Japan while being observed by Hei and July. Kirihara, still investigating BK-201's disappearance, begins working with agents from Section 3.

BK-201 is forced to emerge from hiding to steal a powerful artifact called Izanami, but the mission becomes more dangerous when they discover that the artifact is being guarded by their former ally, Kirihara.

Hei uncovers critical information about the enigmatic Izanami, realizing the urgency of BK-201's mission to retrieve the object before its destruction. To succeed, BK-201 must overcome Genma and prevent Suo from carrying out a decisive action.

Suo and July face a perilous predicament after being betrayed by an ally they trusted. When the two are captured by a particularly menacing Contractor, BK-201 takes decisive action to rescue them.

Hei's team is attacked by Russian forces on a moving train, leading to a fierce confrontation. Amid the chaos, Suo and Tanya are forced to fight each other, their past friendship contrasting with their current roles as opposing Contractors.

Kiko and Kurasawa assist Suo in her search for her missing mother. A mysterious stranger provides crucial information that leads to a long-awaited reunion, which in turn uncovers a surprising truth.

Amber and the members of Evening Primrose find themselves at the center of escalating chaos as Tokyo goes into lockdown. The Black Reaper, aware of the catastrophic potential Amber poses, takes drastic measures to stop her—even if it means defying his own team.

Suo meets someone she believed to be deceased, uncovering crucial information about her past, but their reunion is interrupted by an assault from multiple Contractors.

Suo confronts her prophesied destiny as events come to pass, though her memories begin to disappear under the light of the moon. Amid uncertainty, a sense of hope lingers, signaling the start of a new chapter.
