Dead Souls

Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov aims to purchase the rights to "dead souls"—deceased serfs still registered as taxable—and use them as collateral to secure a substantial loan. He travels to a small provincial town and begins approaching the local landowners with his proposal. These landowners are portrayed as petty and greedy, making it difficult for Chichikov to gain any advantage from his seemingly lucrative offer. Some delay, others refuse without clear reasoning, some promise cooperation but later withdraw, and a few attempt to get involved in the deal themselves. Ultimately, Chichikov concludes that the landowners are beyond redemption and decides to move on to other regions.
