Death Note

A brilliant but uninterested high school student, Light Yagami, discovers the Death Note, a notebook that grants its user the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. Light begins using the notebook to kill criminals, aiming to create a just world free of evil. As the number of murders rises, the enigmatic detective L takes up the case, leading to a high-stakes intellectual showdown between the two geniuses.

As the global criminal population continues to decline, L communicates with representatives from various countries via computer. He proposes the formation of a task force in Japan, to be led by Soichiro Yagami, Light's father.

Ryuk, the Shinigami or god of death who introduced the Death Note to the human world, warns Light that someone is monitoring his actions. Light becomes concerned that he is unable to uncover the identity of the person tracking him, and Ryuk proposes an unusual offer.

Light Yagami, who later becomes known to the world as the criminal mastermind Kira, experiments with the Death Note to determine the full extent of its capabilities by using it to kill six convicted criminals in different ways. Through this process, he discovers that he is able to control the actions of his victims before their deaths.

Soichiro Yagami insists on meeting with L in person after discovering that L has covertly brought FBI agents into Japan. At the same time, Light has uncovered a method to remove those FBI agents from the case—permanently.

Light encounters a woman at the Police Department who delivers an urgent message for the Kira task force. As the son of the chief investigator, Light hears her out and is surprised to learn that she may possess information that could result in his arrest.

Light attempts to use the Death Note to eliminate the woman who could expose and capture him, but he is surprised when the method fails. He quickly deduces that she must have provided him with a false name, leaving him with only minutes to discover her real identity before she reveals her account to the task force.

L insists on placing surveillance devices and cameras in the homes of Chief Yagami and Deputy Director Kitamura, individuals that Raye Penber was investigating. However, Light remains one step ahead, aware that he is being monitored.

As the killings persist, L becomes increasingly wary of Light's seemingly flawless conduct and resolves to look into him personally. To get closer to Light, L enrolls at the same university and discloses his identity as L.

L's suspicion of Light intensifies, leading him to extend an invitation for Light to join the investigation. However, this development is interrupted by a phone call informing them that Soichiro Yagami has suffered a heart attack.

As predicted in the tapes sent to Sakura TV, news anchors and commentators who express skepticism about Kira begin dying one by one. Upon further investigation, L determines that this Kira is not the original—there is a second Kira.

With a second Kira now active, L requests that Light join the investigation team and impersonate the original Kira in an effort to identify the copycat. Light accepts the offer, aiming to shift suspicion away from himself. To his surprise, this new Kira possesses a unique ability that even Light does not have.

Light investigates Aoyama in an attempt to uncover the identity of the second Kira before L grows more suspicious. Meanwhile, Misa Amane, the new Kira, uses her unique ability to locate Light before he can find her.

Light and Misa exchange their Death Notes, and Light requests that Misa use her shinigami, Rem, to eliminate L. In return, Misa demands that Light fall in love with her.

Evidence emerges suggesting that Misa Amane is the second Kira. To protect her, Rem compels Misa to relinquish her possession of the Death Note.

Misa is in confinement, though her memories of the Death Note have been completely wiped away. When Light is also confined, the murders stop and suspicion of Light grows stronger. Then, the killings suddenly resume.

After fifty days in confinement, the killings continue, and Misa and Light are released. However, L has devised a plan to prevent any further murders and arranges for Light's father, Soichiro, to take the two on a ride that may be their last.

Despite lingering suspicions, Light and Misa—having had their memories of being Kira erased—return to headquarters. There, Light observes a peculiar link between the recent Kira murders and the Yotsuba Group.

Matsuda, the task force member assigned to monitor Misa, is eager to make a name for himself. While on a job with Misa, he takes it upon himself to conduct some independent investigation at the Yotsuba Group’s Tokyo headquarters.

L's team uncovers that the Yotsuba Group holds secret meetings to discuss the removal of individuals who pose a threat to their company, leading them to conclude that Kira must be one of the eight executives. Can Light, posing as L, identify the correct one?

The Task Force employs Misa as a means to gain closer access to the Yotsuba Corporation. However, the situation becomes more complex when Rem attempts to communicate with her.

With Misa's assistance, the Task Force learns the identity of the new Kira, prompting L to devise a complex plan to uncover him.

L, Light, and Misa observe from the investigation team building and wonder who Higuchi is speaking with. L speculates that Higuchi might be talking to a shinigami. Rem persuades Higuchi to go to the station, though she has her own self-serving reasons for doing so.

As Higuchi is ultimately captured, Light unintentionally recovers his memories as Kira.

After regaining his memory, Light instructs Misa to start killing following Higuchi's death. The Shinigami Rem recognizes that events are unfolding according to Light's plan and understands that L is about to arrest Misa for being Kira—unless Rem intervenes quickly.

Light has eliminated all obstacles in his path and is nearing the realization of his ideal world.

A new investigator emerges: Near, a key figure in the SPK, an organization dedicated to capturing Kira without the involvement of L. Near is aware of the existence of the Death Notes and is determined to obtain one.

Light, acting under the alias L, informs Near that his sister, Sayu, has been kidnapped by an individual seeking to exchange her for the Death Note. Near learns that the exchange is set to take place in Los Angeles and agrees to assist, while covertly intending to seize the Death Note and apprehend Kira.

Guilt-ridden over allowing the Death Note to fall into Mello's possession in an attempt to save his daughter, Soichiro places himself in danger to retrieve it.

Mello enters SPK headquarters to retrieve a photograph of himself, fearing that Kira will use it to kill him. In return for Near providing the photo, Mello reveals a crucial clue about the Death Notes: some of the rules associated with them are false.

Near contacts the Japanese task force and determines that Kira is among their members. He requests insider information, and Aizawa, beginning to suspect Light, provides it. Near grows suspicious that the new L is actually Light Yagami and that Light is Kira.

Kiyomi Takada, a prominent newscaster, becomes Kira's official spokesperson to the public following the death of Demegawa, who was killed by Mikami. It is revealed that Takada was previously in a romantic relationship with Light during their college years. Meanwhile, Aizawa begins to develop suspicions regarding Light's possible involvement in the Kira case.

Near goes to Japan, allegedly as bait for Kira. Following Light's instructions, Takada asks Mikami to send her five pages of the Death Note. She tells him that he will continue his work in a fake book made to look like the real one.

Aizawa becomes aware of the situation and informs Near, who is already knowledgeable about the notes. Near directs Aizawa to continue monitoring Light, while simultaneously setting a plan in motion to separate Misa from Light.

Light and Near arrange a meeting place for their final confrontation, but the situation takes an unexpected turn when a key player is kidnapped, leading to shocking consequences.

The Japanese Task Force and the SPK confront each other at the YellowBox Warehouse on January 28th. Unbeknownst to both groups, a third party has also arrived at the warehouse, sent by Kira with orders to kill everyone present.

Though Mikami has written all the investigators' names in the Death Note, a minute passes and everyone is still alive. Near seizes Mikami's Death Note, and all is at last revealed.
