Death Note

Light Yagami, an intelligent college student, finds a mysterious black notebook that allows him to kill anyone by writing their name while picturing their face. After experimenting with the notebook on a school bully and a criminal holding his father hostage, Light is visited by Ryuk, the notebook's original owner, a supernatural being known as a shinigami. Encouraged by Ryuk, Light begins using the notebook to eliminate criminals, aiming to build a perfect world.

Ryuk informs Light that Misa Amane, a celebrity he admires, may be dying soon. Light tries to warn her after a concert but is unsuccessful, though one of her bodyguards, Tsutomu Yukida, hears his message and offers to assist in her protection. At the same time, L collaborates with several Japanese police officers, including Soichiro Yagami, to establish a task force aimed at capturing Kira.

Light begins to suspect that L's phone call was a trap and resolves to eliminate the FBI agents involved to avoid suspicion. As he plans his next moves, he recalls discovering a photo of Cathy Campbell, Raye's lover, during a previous incident. Meanwhile, Misa trades part of her remaining lifespan to gain the shinigami eyes from Rem, enabling her to see the true names and lifespans of people.

L suspects a connection between Mark Dwellton's death and Kira, so he secretly monitors the homes of Mark's subjects. Light discovers the surveillance and devises a strategy to temporarily clear his name with the task force. Despite this, L remains unconvinced and enrolls at Light's university to investigate him directly.

Misa confesses her love for Light and offers to assist him in killing L. Meanwhile, L informs the task force of potential evidence suggesting a second Kira may be active and proposes bringing Light into the investigation to advance their efforts and test his involvement.

Light asks to be monitored by L and the investigation team, suggesting he might be acting as Kira without realizing it. After he is taken into custody, the murders of criminals temporarily cease, but soon continue when Rem gives the Death Note to a new user.

Light and Misa collaborate with the police task force in an effort to capture Kira, but L remains suspicious, believing they may have transferred their powers to someone else, resulting in their memory loss. Meanwhile, members of the Yotsuba Group, aware they are under investigation, seek help from an investigator named Babel, who is later revealed to be Near in disguise.

When the notebook is taken by the investigation team, a misleading rule created by Ryuk leads L to believe that Light and Misa are not Kira. Near is identified by Soichiro as the next L, while L prepares for a decisive showdown with the killer.

L reveals he tricked Light into incriminating himself by using a fake notebook, leading to Light's confession. However, before the task force can hear the confession, L is killed by Mikami during a heart attack at the warehouse. Light convinces the team that L had given him his real name in self-defense, and after L's funeral, Near assumes leadership and shifts the investigation toward the prosecutors who visited the headquarters on the day of L's death.

Soichiro and Light take the Death Note to a location marked by Himura in an effort to rescue Sayu, while Mogi and other police officers, following Near's orders, prepare to raid the site.

Soichiro Yagami, inspired by L's methods, takes extreme risks to stop Kira, whom he now suspects is Light. In response, Light attempts to use the police to eliminate Mello, who has prepared dangerous countermeasures to expose Light as the killer.
