The miniseries centers on the three new main characters introduced in the film *Death Note: Light Up the NEW World*: Tsukuru Mishima, Ryuzaki, and Yuki Shien. Each episode offers background on one of the characters and serves to connect the 10-year gap between the previous films, which are set in 2005–2006, and the new film, which takes place in 2016.
