The Funnie family begins their new life in Bluffington after moving from Bloatsburg. Eleven-year-old Doug, anxious about making friends, meets neighbor Mr. Dink, who introduces him to the town and The Honker Burger, where he quickly befriends Skeeter Valentine and develops a crush on Patti Mayonnaise. His excitement is tempered when he encounters the bully Roger Klotz, who convinces him he must catch a Neematoad at Stinsen's Pond to become a town hero.

Doug looks forward to his first school costume dance and a possible dance with Patti, but after Roger points out his lack of dancing ability, he seeks help from Skeeter to improve.

Doug builds a volcano model for a school project, but when a false rumor spreads that it caused an explosion in the science room, he panics and disguises himself as "Jack Bandit" to evade suspicion and the authorities.

Doug investigates when Porkchop starts behaving unusually and discovers that his friend is smitten with a poodle, experiencing what is described as a case of "puppy love.

Doug becomes self-conscious about his nose after being teased by Skeeter's brother and refuses to participate in School Photo Swap Day.

Doug becomes a member of the Bluff Scouts and is paired with Roger for his first camping trip.

Roger repeatedly asks Patti for help with his school assignment, leading to an outburst from Patti that results in both of them being sent to detention. Doug becomes upset by the situation and tries to prevent Roger from bothering Patti. The episode marks the first appearance of the character Quailman.

Doug searches for a barber who can replicate the haircut style of his old friend from Bloatsburg, leading him on a town-wide quest to find Mr. Sweney while avoiding the dangerous barber Fluke.

Doug takes on the challenge of babysitting Dale, Skeeter's younger brother, while the Valentines are away and seeks advice from his friends, only to learn that their suggestions may not always be reliable.

Doug spends a day creating a comic featuring his favorite superhero, Quailman, who battles the villain Dr. Klotzenstein, a scientist using a "brain beam" to drain intelligence from students at Bluffington School.

Patti is denied a spot on the school baseball team by Coach Spitz due to her gender. Determined, she forms her own team with other rejected students and arranges a game against the coach.

Doug hesitates to ask Patti to the Tri-County Fair, so Skeeter suggests inviting Beebe along. At the fair, Doug hopes to ride the giant ferris wheel with Patti.

Skeeter informs Doug that his family is planning to move, meaning they can't attend Beebe's costume party. Though disappointed, Doug is surprised to learn that Skeeter secretly moves in with him to avoid leaving Bluffington and his best friend.
