El Palmar de Troya

In March 1968, four girls claimed to have seen an apparition of the Virgin Mary on the Alcaparrosa estate, one kilometer from the village of El Palmar de Troya, in the province of Seville. Weeks later, several neighbors reported additional sightings, and by the summer of the same year, an altar was constructed, marking the foundation of what would become the Palmarian Christian Church. These initial apparitions led to the rise of a religious movement that expanded globally, broke with the Vatican, and established its own line of popes. In June 2018, Ginés, the last Pope of El Palmar de Troya, and his wife entered the congregation's facilities, an event considered the penultimate chapter in a story blending tragedy and surrealism. Scandals, allegations of sexual abuse, improbable stories, and various accusations have characterized the more than fifty years of this religious group, which some regard as a church and others as a major sect.
