Freaky Stories is a Canadian television series that originally aired on YTV in English and Canal Famille in French. The animated show, set in a 1940s-style diner called Ted's Diner, is hosted by two animatronic puppets: Larry de Bug, a cockroach, and his gooey sidekick, Maurice the maggot, with the diner staffed by Rosie, the waitress. Described as "a Twilight Zone for kids," the series explores urban legends and myths commonly told as scary campfire or bedtime stories. Each episode begins and ends with the phrase: "This is a true story, and it happened to a friend of a friend of mine," and features Larry saying, "Just because they never happened, doesn't mean they ain't true." The animation styles and musical scoring vary within each half-hour episode, with the first season alone featuring 20 different visual styles. The short stories and changing styles were specifically designed to maintain viewers' attention.
