Sir Galavant, a brave and dashing knight, is devastated when his beloved Madalena chooses the wealthy and powerful King Richard over him. With the help of Princess Isabella, who seeks to rescue her kingdom from Richard's tyranny, Galavant embarks on a quest to regain Madalena's heart and restore his heroic stature.

Galavant competes in a jousting tournament against the arrogant Sir Jean Hamm in hopes of reclaiming his heroic confidence and earning money and a prize rooster. As his chances of winning seem slim, King Richard enlists Gareth's help to adopt a more macho persona in an effort to win Madalena's approval.

A trip to Sid's hometown uncovers inconsistencies in his claims about his past. As Galavant and Isabella support his version of events, King Richard organizes a ball to lift the spirits of Valencia's citizens.

Galavant, Isabella, and Sid must set aside their differences to survive an attack by land-bound pirates. At the same time, King Richard attempts a new approach in his pursuit of Madalena.

The trio nears Valencia and takes refuge with a group of monks who have dedicated themselves to music, led by the enigmatic Confessional Monk. Meanwhile, Madalena, growing impatient with King Richard, devises a cunning scheme involving the infatuated Chef and her charming handmaiden, Gwynne.

Galavant grapples with the revelation of his true feelings, while King Richard embarks on a journey of self-discovery after consuming a potion provided by the magician Xanax. As Galavant gets closer to the woman he loves, Richard becomes more assertive, coinciding with the return of his older, antagonistic brother, Kingsley.

Isabella hopes Galavant will impress her parents through polite conversation, but he believes a dramatic rescue of the imprisoned will be more effective. When King Richard challenges his brother to a duel and requires a champion, Galavant sees his chance to prove himself.

While Isabella receives the call while planning to escape Hortensia, the connection is poor and she only hears every other word, leading to confusion and heartbreak. Galavant and King Richard return to Richard's former castle, now a thriving democratic village, in an effort to raise an army against Hortensia. Richard struggles with his diminished role as king, while Galavant attempts—and fails—to recruit volunteers at a town hall meeting. Meanwhile, in Hortensia, Wormwood manipulates Isabella with an enchanted tiara, and Madalena coerces Sid into helping Gareth confront his guilt over betraying Richard.

King Richard, on a mission to build an army, uncovers a surprising link to Roberta, a skilled warrior who has joined their cause, while Galavant attempts to play love counselor. Madalena, invited to a prestigious social event, finds the experience disappointing and is left unsettled by unexpected emotions, which Gareth helps her cope with. Meanwhile, under Wormwood's influence, Isabella is fully immersed in wedding preparations, and Chef argues with Gwen about the merits of life in Hortencia.

Galavant grows frustrated with Richard after he trades the Jewel of Valencia for a dragon and sets out alone to find the giants. He discovers they are different from what he expected, but they agree to help him if he aids them in fighting the dwarves. Galavant, Richard, and Roberta encounter Galavant's long-lost father, Sir Arnold Galavant, during a difficult period in their journey. As Richard enrolls in Arnold's knight training school, Galavant confronts the legacy of the man who left him as a child.

Richard, Roberta, and Sid seek help from the healer Neo of Sporin, who possesses a magical potion that might save Galavant's life. As Galavant recovers, Roberta confesses her feelings for Richard, nearly leading to a romantic moment. Meanwhile, Neo provides Galavant with an army, only for it to be revealed as a force of undead zombies.

As the conflict between Hortensia and Valencia escalates, Isabella initially considers surrendering with the Jester, but she refuses Madalena's terms and returns to rally the Hortensia forces. Madalena, against Gareth's objections, seeks help from Wormwood and learns dark magic. Meanwhile, Richard and Roberta advance their relationship, and as they prepare for battle, Roberta makes a significant choice. Galavant discovers a way to inspire his zombie army, while Sid flees the scene.
