Moist von Lipwig is a con man with a particular talent—he is utterly unremarkable. When his execution is stayed in Terry Pratchett's Discworld, he is given the task of working off his debt to society as the kingdom's head Postman. As he begins his new role, he discovers that things are not always as they seem, and soon finds himself delivering mail for his very life.

Moist von Lipwig discovers that the traditional Post Office has been largely replaced by the faster, more modern Clacks telegraph system, controlled by the ruthless Reacher Gilt. Determined to prove the value of the old ways, Moist issues a challenge to Gilt, setting up a race between the two communication methods.
