Going Straight
Going Straight is a BBC sitcom that served as a direct spin-off from *Porridge*, starring Ronnie Barker as Norman Stanley Fletcher, who had recently been released from the fictional Slade Prison, the setting of the earlier series. The show follows Fletcher as he attempts to lead an honest life, having pledged to avoid crime after his release. The title refers to this goal, with "straight" being slang for honesty, in contrast to "bent," meaning dishonest. Richard Beckinsale reappeared as Lennie Godber, Fletcher's naive young cellmate, who was now in a relationship with Fletcher's daughter, Ingrid. Ingrid's brother, Raymond, was played by a teenage Nicholas Lyndhurst. Only one series, consisting of six episodes, was produced in 1978. The show attracted over 15 million viewers and won a BAFTA award in March 1979. However, plans for a second series were already in jeopardy due to Beckinsale's untimely death earlier that same month.
