The Hatfield-McCoy feud is a legendary American family conflict that spanned decades and nearly led to a war between Kentucky and West Virginia. The saga begins with Devil Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy, who were close friends and comrades until near the end of the Civil War. After the war, they return to their respective homes—Hatfield in West Virginia and McCoy just across the Tug River in Kentucky—where tensions, misunderstandings, and resentments gradually escalate into open warfare between their families. As the conflict intensifies, friends, neighbors, and external forces become involved, bringing the two states to the brink of another civil war.
