Drama

Heartland was an Australian television drama series that aired on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 1994. It consisted of thirteen episodes and featured Cate Blanchett and Ernie Dingo in leading roles. The series was also known internationally as Burned Bridge. Heartland centers on the mystery of an Aboriginal girl's death and the uncertainty surrounding the guilt of her boyfriend, who is arrested for her murder. It also explores the developing relationship between two individuals who believe in his innocence, as they navigate hostility from both white and Aboriginal communities, as well as the challenges posed by their differing backgrounds, attitudes, and cultures. Set in a small coastal town, the series follows the residents as they deal with the turmoil of murder, mystery, and romance, and attempt to rebuild their lives and self-esteem in the face of adversity. Additional plot elements focus on the character of Elizabeth Ashton, a writer who arrives in the coastal community. Her presence is met with some suspicion, as she is unaware of the racial tensions that exist in the town. Her naivety allows her to form a friendship with the local Aboriginal man Vincent Burunga. The local police officer, Phil McCarthy, becomes interested in Ashton and is both a romantic rival to Burunga and an antagonist due to his racial prejudice.
