Claire returns to college in California but has difficulty adjusting, as a student's mysterious death during orientation brings unwanted attention. Meanwhile, in Japan, Hiro and Ando continue helping people with special abilities and actively promoting their efforts. Elsewhere, Angela is concerned about Nathan's identity being revealed, Matt tries to live a normal life in Los Angeles, and Peter faces possible danger from a carnival group led by Samuel Sullivan.

Claire and Gretchen start looking into the death of Claire's roommate, Annie, while Noah turns to Peter for assistance. At the same time, Samuel and Edgar go after a compass, Hiro gains knowledge about his future, and Matt is troubled by visions from a menacing opponent.

Peter deals with the consequences of his heroic actions and encounters a new hero who is reluctant to accept their destiny.
