Hu Tong

The story follows three generations of women in a family who remain committed to serving their neighborhood, from the early years of the liberation to the present. Their experiences reflect the changing face of youth in each era, highlighting the Hutong culture in Beijing. Tian Zao has been involved in grassroots work since the early days of the liberation. She eventually became a leader of the residents' committee and dedicated 70 years to serving the community. She participated in anti-spy efforts, campaigns to eliminate illiteracy, and organized the donation of handicrafts to the volunteer army. During the reform era, she encouraged her daughter to continue her work. Even after retiring, Tian Zao did not leave her post. When she turned 90, her granddaughter became the new head of the residents' committee.
