Set in late 1950s America, a time perceived as more innocent, the brutal and senseless murder of a Midwestern family shocked the nation. The film is based on Truman Capote's nonfiction novel, noted for its detailed and psychologically insightful account. While in prison, Dick Hickock, 20, hears a fellow inmate describe $10,000 in cash stored in a home safe by a wealthy rancher. After his parole, Dick convinces Perry Smith, also 20 and an ex-convict, to join him in seeking the money. On a night in November 1959, Dick and Perry break into the home of Herb Clutter in Holcomb, Kansas. Finding no safe, they become enraged, wake the sleeping family, and kill them all in a brutal manner. The bodies are discovered by two friends visiting before Sunday church. The murders disturb the small Great Plains town, known for its common practice of leaving doors unlocked. Detective Alvin Dewey of the Kansas Bureau of Investigation leads the case, but there are no clues, no apparent motive, and no suspects.
