Jamaica Inn

Set in 1820 against the bleak landscape of the windswept Cornish moors, the story follows young and spirited Mary, who is compelled to live with her Aunt Patience after her mother's death. Upon arriving at the remote Jamaica Inn, Mary discovers that her aunt is no longer the lively woman she remembers from childhood, but instead a subdued figure under the control of her domineering husband, Joss. The inn has no guests—its rooms are locked and used for storage—but it soon becomes evident that this is a facade, as Joss leads a smuggling operation and uses Jamaica Inn as the central hub for his illicit trade.
