Japan Sinks: 2020

The Mutoh family navigates their everyday routines as Japan is struck by a sequence of devastating earthquakes that cause widespread chaos and destruction.

As floodwaters continue to rise, the Mutoh family and their friends Nanami and Haruo decide to leave the shrine they have been using as a shelter and attempt to escape Tokyo.

After a tragic incident, the remaining members press on toward the west, and Kite, a well-known Estonian YouTuber, joins their journey.

Seeking refuge in a grocery store, the group is forced to move on due to ongoing earthquakes. With the help of the store owner, they escape and pick up an English hitchhiker during their journey.

The travelers are warmly received by the residents of Shan City, but tensions arise when the group's leader engages in a spiritual ritual to communicate with the deceased, straining the relationship between Ayumu and her mother.

Kunio is imprisoned by the commune following an escape attempt. Ayumu discovers that an elderly member is using Morse code to convey an urgent and desperate message.

The survivors arrive at a port where a boat evacuation is underway. Ayumu is selected for her athletic abilities, but the rest of the group is left behind.

As the Japanese archipelago begins to submerge, a group of survivors flees on a fishing boat, only to be compelled to abandon ship and take to the lifeboats when the vessel is damaged.

The raft survivors join forces with Kite and Onodera to travel to the coordinates of a research facility, which may contain critical data needed to save Japan.

Onodera discovers data revealing a map that suggests portions of Japan could re-emerge, offering hope for rescue. Survivors work to re-establish a connection with Kite's internet balloon to seek help.
