The show returned for a fifth season in Seaside Heights on January 5, 2012, with the season finale airing on March 15, 2012. On March 19, 2012, MTV confirmed a sixth season, and on August 30, 2012, the network announced that *Jersey Shore* would end after that season, which premiered on October 4. The series finale aired on December 20, 2012. The show's debut was marked by controversy over the use of the terms "Guido" and "Guidette," portrayals of Italian-American stereotypes, and criticism from local residents who noted that the cast members were not actual residents of the area. *Jersey Shore* achieved record ratings for MTV, becoming the network's most-watched series ever. The cast has also been credited with introducing a distinctive lexicon and phrases into American popular culture.
