The anime is set in Sugomori City, a fictional Japanese city built on reclaimed land, which has seen a steady decline in population over the years. The story begins when Noriko Sonosaki tells her classmate Katsuhira Agata, "You have been selected to be a Kiznaiver." The Kizuna System, an incomplete system designed to promote world peace by connecting people through shared wounds, links Katsuhira to his classmates, who have vastly different lives and personalities from his own. Through this system, any injury sustained by one Kiznaiver is divided and transmitted among the others. Those connected to the Kizuna System are collectively known as Kiznaivers. The narrative unfolds in Sugomori City, where Katsuhira and the others live.
