Under the guidance of headmaster Alaric Saltzman, the next generation of supernatural beings at The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted—including tribrid Hope Mikaelson, Alaric’s twins Lizzie and Josie, high-energy vampire MG, newly triggered werewolf Rafael, and the mysterious Landon—come of age in the most unconventional way possible, nurtured to be their best selves, in spite of their worst impulses.

Alaric, Hope, and Rafael set out on a journey to find Landon, whose sudden disappearance has sparked suspicion. At the same time, during an annual flag football game against Mystic Falls High, Lizzie and Josie's efforts to remain unnoticed fall apart when Penelope becomes involved.

As punishment for breaking the rules, Hope, Lizzie, Josie, and MG are required to participate in a community service project in the Mystic Falls town square. At the same time, Landon and Rafael's efforts to live a carefree life on the road take a dangerous turn when they become unsuspecting targets. In the end, Alaric comes to realize that keeping secrets from his students may be causing more harm than good.

When two local students go missing, Alaric sends Hope, Lizzie, MG, and Landon to Mystic Falls High to investigate. Meanwhile, as Josie helps Rafael adjust to his new life at the school, his reluctance to follow the wolf pack's rules puts a target on his back. Lastly, an unsettling discovery puts Alaric and Sheriff Donovan at odds with one another.

As Alaric moves to empower the students by establishing an honor council, tensions begin to surface among them. At the same time, Hope is determined to uncover more about Landon's past and conducts a series of magical tests on him. In parallel, Alaric and Dorian confront the next creature in an effort to determine its intentions and origins.

As Lizzie and Josie prepare for their long-awaited Sweet Sixteen party, Alaric becomes preoccupied with the latest supernatural arrival, one that proves particularly personal. Meanwhile, Penelope's latest scheme gives MG one final opportunity to impress Lizzie on her special day, while an unexpected betrayal escalates tensions between Hope and Rafael.

As Hope delves into her studies to learn more about the latest creature to arrive at the school, events take a dark and twisted turn, forcing her to confront one of her deepest fears. At the same time, Alaric tries to assist Rafael in coping as his past returns to haunt him.

When they learn that Landon is in trouble, Hope and Alaric begin searching for him. During their journey, they discover revealing and surprising details about Landon’s past.

During a stressful week of exams, Hope, Rafael, Landon, and MG find their attempts to study repeatedly disrupted by the arrival of a new monster that feeds on their worst fears. At the same time, Hope deals with a secret she has been keeping from Landon.

After spending time in Europe with her mother, Lizzie returns to Mystic Falls and encounters someone who has the power to fulfill all her wishes—including the disappearance of Hope Mikaelson.

When Alaric postpones the school's annual talent show, Lizzie and Josie are determined to ensure the event still takes place. At the same time, tensions grow as the students encounter a creature that causes them to lose their inhibitions. In the end, Alaric decides to skip school and spend time with Emma.

When the urn goes missing, Alaric, Hope, Josie, Lizzie, Kaleb, Dorian, and Emma set out to find the artifact before the next Malivore creature arrives. At the same time, Lizzie confronts Hope over the past spring breaks she has ruined. The group ultimately unites when a town-wide quarantine threatens to reveal their supernatural identities.

When MG and Landon go missing after a spontaneous road trip to visit MG’s parents, leaving a distressed Rafael with no memory of what occurred, Hope, Alaric, and Kaleb set out to find them before it is too late.

As the Salvatore School prepares to host the Miss Mystic Falls pageant, Hope is dealing with a recent trauma that is causing her magic to become unstable. At the same time, the unexpected arrival of Roman, a boy from Hope’s past, prompts Landon to remain on high alert. Elsewhere, MG is grappling with the consequences of his recent actions, while Josie finds her own ambition to win the pageant overshadowed by Lizzie’s plans for the event.

As the consequences of Hope's actions strain her relationship with Landon, she seeks Lizzie's assistance in repairing the damage. At the same time, Landon begins to uncover hidden truths about his own history, while Josie investigates a secret that Alaric has been concealing.
