NBA All-Star Slam Dunk Contest

First aired
1976
Reality

The NBA Slam Dunk Contest is an annual competition held as part of the NBA All-Star Weekend. It was originally introduced by the American Basketball Association (ABA) at its All-Star Game in 1976 in Denver, the same year the slam dunk was legalized in the NCAA. Due to the ABA–NBA merger later that year, there was no professional-level slam dunk contest until 1984. Over the years, the contest has used various formats, including, until 2014, fan voting via text messaging to determine the winner of the final round.
