Margaret Hale, a spirited 19-year-old, moves with her family from the south of England to the industrial town of Milton after her father resigns from his clerical post over a moral issue. Struggling to adjust to northern life, Margaret forms a bond with the working-class Higgins family and becomes increasingly aware of social disparities. Her initial dislike of the mill owner John Thornton is tempered by his growing admiration for her.

Maria Hale falls ill, prompting her daughter Margaret to reach out to her estranged uncle Frederick, who had been wrongfully exiled from England years before. Meanwhile, mill workers in Milton go on strike, leading Thornton to hire Irish laborers to meet his production deadlines. A violent confrontation ensues when the striking workers attack the new workers, resulting in Margaret being injured, and this event ultimately leads Thornton to propose to her.

Thornton and Margaret's relationship becomes strained after he is rejected in his marriage proposal, and misunderstandings deepen when Frederick, Margaret's brother, is mistaken for her lover. As Margaret begins to regret her harsh treatment of Thornton, she witnesses his changing perception of her. Meanwhile, Margaret grieves the deaths of her mother and her friend Bessy.

Frederick arrives safely in Spain, while Margaret, after her father's death, moves to live with her aunt in London. Upon learning that Frederick is Margaret's brother, Thornton considers ways to save his struggling mill, and Margaret uses an inheritance from her godfather, Mr. Bell, to support his efforts.
