In 2014, aliens made themselves known to humanity, seeking to establish trade. In exchange for limestone, they offered a consciousness-controlled general-use robot known as an "Exoframe." More affordable than an aircraft, tank, or firearm, and simple enough for anyone to operate, the "Exoframe" spreads change across the world at an unprecedented pace.
