Emma Swan's life is disrupted when she is reunited with Henry, the son she gave up for adoption, and she takes him to Storybrooke, a peculiar town where he is in the care of his foster mother.

Regina employs all available methods to force Emma out of Storybrooke and separate her from Henry. Meanwhile, the episode explores the dark events that prompted the Evil Queen to cast the curse on the Enchanted Forest.

With Henry's encouragement, Emma convinces Mary Margaret to visit a comatose man at the hospital and read to him from a magical storybook. The experience profoundly affects Mary Margaret. At the same time, in the Enchanted Forest, Prince Charming and Snow White meet in an unexpected and unconventional way.

Emma works to rescue a young pregnant woman from Mr. Gold's control, while in the Enchanted Forest, Cinderella strikes a troubling agreement with Rumplestiltskin.

Sheriff Graham starts deputizing Emma as a mysterious sinkhole appears at the edge of Storybrooke, causing concern among the townspeople. Henry, curious about the sinkhole's possible link to the fairytale world, puts his safety at risk to look into it. David struggles with his emotions as he is caught between his relationship with Kathryn and his growing feelings for Mary Margaret, while Emma uncovers Sheriff Graham's dishonesty. Meanwhile, in the Enchanted Forest, Prince Charming is about to undergo a life-changing experience.

As a resident of Storybrooke begins to remember their past life in the Enchanted Forest, the town grapples with the death of a cherished member. Meanwhile, in the fairytale realm, the Evil Queen is searching for an assassin who possesses no heart, with the intent to kill Snow White.

Regina and Mr. Gold are involved in a political power struggle as Emma competes against Sidney for a key position in Storybrooke. Meanwhile, Rumplestiltskin searches for a powerful artifact in the Enchanted Forest to assist his son in preventing an impending war.

In the Enchanted Forest, Rumplestiltskin offers to take any necessary actions if his son can find a way for him to give up his powers and return to his original self.

August offers Emma a strategy to defeat Regina and gain custody of Henry, while Regina plots to seduce David now that Mary Margaret has returned to work. In the fairy-tale world, a plan to rescue Snow White and Prince Charming's daughter is proposed and backed by Geppetto, who is driven by concern for the safety of his own child.
