Kousaka Kyousuke, a quiet high school student, struggles with a distant and tense relationship with his younger sister, Kirino, who excels in both academics and sports.

Kyousuke realizes that Kirino needs friends with whom she can openly discuss her otaku interests as he faces her questioning about his lack of progress on the game she assigned him.

Kirino meets two new otaku friends at an in-person gathering—Kuroneko and Saori Bajeena—and they bond over shared interests, spending time discussing anime and related topics. Kyousuke feels reassured seeing Kirino connect with others who share her passions.

Kirino's friends from outside the anime club, Aragaki Ayase and Kurusu Nanako, visit her home, and Kirino insists that Kyousuke stay out of sight to avoid being seen by them.

Kyousuke is sent to the supermarket by his mother and unexpectedly runs into Manami. After a conversation, they decide it would be nice for Manami to visit Kyousuke's home for the first time in a long while.

Kirino asks Kyosuke for help attending a Meruru trailer in Akihabara and goes shopping with him, later giving him an eroge as a token of appreciation for their year of "life consultation.

Ayase becomes upset when Kirino spends more time on the mobile game Love Touch than with her, so she asks Kyosuke to intervene. Kyosuke takes the game from Kirino to prevent her from playing, but ends up getting addicted himself. As tensions rise and Ayase grows angry, Kyosuke's attempts to win her favor by mimicking the game's behavior backfire, leading to a dramatic confrontation with Kirino.

Kyosuke, Kirino, and Ruri visit Saori's apartment for her birthday, where they finally get a good look at her without her signature glasses. Four years prior, Saori, a shy and physically frail girl, was introduced to the otaku lifestyle by her sister Kaori and her future flatmates Shinya Sanada and Kanata Yamanashi. After Kaori left to marry, Saori was left alone, but with encouragement and a pair of swirly glasses from Kanata, she resolved to build her own otaku community and help others as she had been helped.

Kirino's former track rival from America, Ria Hagry, visits Japan and stays with her, leading to tension with Kyosuke as Kirino becomes overprotective. The three visit Akihabara, and Ria challenges Kirino to a race, defeating her and taking satisfaction in her revenge. Before leaving, Ria suggests Kyosuke is the motivation behind Kirino's hard work, which he doubts, and later Kirino makes an unexpected request for Kyosuke to be her boyfriend.

Kirino enlists Kyosuke to pretend to be her boyfriend during a meeting with company director Misaki Fujima, who offers her an overseas modeling opportunity. To avoid suspicion, they go on a series of awkward "dates" together, encountering friends and acquaintances who challenge their ruse. By the end of the day, Kirino expresses frustration with Kyosuke's performance, hinting at a possible real boyfriend, while Kyosuke seeks clarification from Ruri before confronting Kirino with a direct question.

Kouki Mikagami, a designer from Misaki's company and an unexpected otaku, is introduced as a potential love interest for Kirino. Tensions arise at an after-party when Kirino falsely claims Kouki is her boyfriend after witnessing what appears to be Ruri confessing to Kyosuke, leading to emotional confrontations and Kyosuke vowing to prove Kouki unworthy of Kirino. Eventually, Kirino admits she fabricated the relationship out of jealousy.

Kyosuke is asked by Ruri to give her a clear answer regarding their relationship after a party, and after reflecting and receiving advice from Kirino and Manami, he agrees to become her boyfriend. Struggling with how to act as a proper partner, Kyosuke confides in Kouki and later learns from the Games Research Club that his feelings for Ruri were obvious to others. In a moment of honesty, Ruri shares her own anxieties about the relationship and suggests they go on a date.

Kyosuke is treated by Kirino for a facial injury and tells her that he and Ruri have begun dating, to her unexpected approval. On their first date, Ruri surprises Kyosuke with a custom cosplay and shares her goal of helping him and Kirino get along, based on a guidebook she created. Though puzzled, Kyosuke agrees to help, and the two spend time together, including meeting Ruri's younger sisters, before attending a festival together at the end of summer break.

Kyosuke is troubled when he discovers that Ruri has suddenly transferred schools and moved away, with no explanation. With help from Kirino, he tracks her down to a hot spring town, where Ruri reveals that Kirino had been behind the deception that led Kyosuke to believe she was dating someone else. Despite this, Kirino wants to see Kyosuke and Ruri reunite, believing their relationship is worth saving.

Ayase, upset that Kyosuke's breakup with Ruri was not her fault, asks him to resume his role as her manager to assist at a Meruru concert featuring Kanako and Bridget. Meanwhile, Kyosuke borrows a bike from Kouki to pick up Kirino, who initially cannot attend due to work. They arrive in time for ClariS's performance, and Kirino expresses gratitude for Kyosuke's help.

Kyosuke is sent to live independently by his parents, concerned about his growing closeness to Kirino, in hopes he will focus on his studies. Kirino offers to do one favor for him if he earns an A, while Kanako's visit to his new apartment leads to an awkward discovery of an eroge she lent him. Ayase and Ruri also visit, resulting in an embarrassing confrontation, after which Kyosuke reaffirms his decision not to start dating until he resolves things with Kirino.

Kyosuke hosts a party at his new apartment, where his friends gather, including Kirino, who tries to set aside her dislike for Manami for his sake. As the group debates who should help Kyosuke prepare for his mock exams, Kirino assigns the task to Ayase, whose support helps him achieve an A grade and return home. Before he leaves, Ayase confesses her feelings, but Kyosuke declines, saying he loves someone else, leading Ayase to kiss him on the cheek before parting ways.

Kirino reflects on her childhood admiration for Kyosuke, which faded as he became more laid-back, a change she attributes to Manami. After confronting Manami and realizing the Kyosuke she idealized never existed, Kirino distances herself from him and dedicates herself to self-improvement. As an adult, she pursues a career in modeling, befriends Ayase, and hides her otaku interests out of shame, though her reconnection with Kyosuke leads to him becoming a steadfast presence in her life.
