Perry Mason

In 1931 Los Angeles, struggling private investigator Perry Mason and his assistant Pete Strickland are enlisted by Perry's mentor, attorney E.B. Jonathan, to investigate the violent kidnapping of one-year-old Charlie Dodson, a case involving a ransom demand of $100,000.

An evangelical preacher, Sister Alice, publicly endorses the Dodsons with both moral and financial backing after one of her passionate sermons, causing tension with her mother, Birdy. Meanwhile, police officer Paul Drake, en route to a domestic situation, is unexpectedly drawn into a disturbing and puzzling murder investigation.

District attorney Maynard Barnes seeks to outmaneuver E.B. and his team by revealing a startling new development to the public. Mason and Strickland, with assistance from Virgil at the city morgue, obtain physical evidence without authorization. Mason later tries to get information from Drake, who is becoming increasingly cautious under the scrutiny of Holcomb and Ennis.

Mason and Strickland once again turn to Virgil for help with an illegal task. After Sister Alice recovers from a disturbing incident, Birdy encourages her to withdraw her allegations about baby Charlie. E.B., confronting his financial troubles, takes out his anger on Della.
