Mirai Kakehashi, overwhelmed by despair on his middle school graduation day, attempts suicide but is saved by the angel Nasse, who gives him wings and arrows to help restore his hope. As Mirai begins to recover, Nasse shares troubling revelations that lead Mirai to confront his aunt, the woman raising him, to uncover the truth.

Mirai is told by Nasse that he has been selected as one of thirteen "God candidates," with only one chosen to become the next God. Though skeptical at first, Mirai begins to embrace the possibility of a new life. His journey becomes more complicated when a fellow candidate is found dead under mysterious circumstances and a new candidate, calling himself "Metropoliman," publicly appears during a bank robbery.

Mirai, now a high school student, is struck by Saki Hanakago's Red Arrow of Love after mistaking an angel for her. Determined to protect Saki, he considers sacrificing himself to defeat another God candidate, even as masked candidate Metropoliman begins to act, shifting the battle's dynamics.

Metropoliman uses a televised message to call the God candidates to a meeting at Jinbo Stadium to determine who will become the next God, but Metro Blue and Metro Yellow arrive skeptical of his intentions. A chaotic battle ensues, leaving Mirai and Saki in the stands struggling to decide how to respond. As the situation escalates, they are forced to make a difficult choice.

Mirai and Saki feel defeated after a loss to Metropoliman at Jinbo Stadium, but their despair is short-lived when they are approached by a new contender named Nanato Mukaido, who believes Metropoliman should not ascend as the next God and offers to join forces against him.

Girl A, a serial killer who targeted middle school girls, escapes from a secure facility. Mirai's team theorizes that Metropoliman provided her with Wings and an Arrow to draw out other candidates for the role of God. As the first victim is discovered at the Grand Tower, Mirai's group decides to intervene to stop Girl A's killing spree.

Mirai and Mukaido fly to Grand Tower using their Wings, only to fall into a trap set by their enemy Metropoliman. During the confrontation, Metropoliman mocks Mirai for his lack of courage, but Mirai surprises everyone by taking a bold and dangerous action.

The aftermath of the battle at Grand Tower leaves a lasting impact on Mirai and the others, particularly on Saki, who was unable to take part and becomes increasingly troubled, eventually asking Mirai to end her life. Mirai uncovers the reason behind Saki's selection as a God Candidate and urges her to make an important decision. At the same time, Kanade Uryu, who is secretly Metropoliman, begins planning his next course of action.

A new contender for godhood devises a cunning plan to ensnare Mirai and his allies, forcing them to confront a dangerous challenge.

Mukaido is lured into a deadly trap by Hajime, who has taken Mukaido's wife and daughter hostage. Mirai enters the trap to try to save them, while Saki, unable to fight without her Wings, struggles with helplessness and attempts to assist despite her limitations. Witnessing Saki's desperation, the angel Revel reflects on his own powerlessness and is overcome with emotion.

Revel is promoted to first-rank angel, and Saki receives her wings. They arrive at the park where a battle is underway, and Saki uses a Red Arrow to strike Hajime, awakening his feelings for the first time. As Hajime struggles with his emotions, Kanade introduces a hidden strategy that disrupts the battle and leads to a chaotic, unpredictable confrontation.

Fuyuko, a scientist working under Kanade, threatens Mirai and his allies by warning of a large-scale virus attack unless they agree to be test subjects for her new drug. Kanade selects Mirai as the first test subject, and despite protests from Mukaido and Saki, Mirai willingly confronts Fuyuko alone as the injection is about to be administered.

Mirai and Metropoliman engage in a structured duel, taking turns launching arrows at one another while adhering to an agreement to fight fairly. As the battle progresses, Metropoliman contemplates his past experiences and the principles that guide him.

Mirai and Kanade's duel is unknowingly broadcast online, drawing the attention of people across Japan and the MPD. As their battle reaches its climax, the confrontation between the Red Arrow and the White Arrow takes on greater significance. The outcome remains uncertain as they fight for their lives and the fulfillment of their deepest desires.

Mukaido's final actions lead to a resolution of his long-standing conflict with Metropoliman, also known as Kanade, but Mirai discovers that Kanade has been secretly wounded by a Red Arrow from an unknown source. As the MPD investigates the identities of the God candidates, a new candidate emerges, signaling a shift in the unfolding situation.

A young boy named Susumu, who claims to be a "God candidate," goes on live television to share details about the mysterious God selection process, sparking a global search for other candidates. Mirai and Saki, who are also candidates, face mounting pressure as their identities must remain secret. While returning home from school, Mirai is approached by an MPD detective named Hoshi.

Mirai and Saki, with assistance from Hoshi and Yumiki, investigate a series of mysterious deaths among acquaintances of the Nakaumi brothers, suspecting one may be a God candidate. At the Nakaumi family home, they encounter an unexpected situation and struggle to convince the younger brother, Shuji, to cooperate. The experience leads Mirai to reflect on the nature of happiness.

Mirai's group confirms the involvement of four God candidates and aims to rescue Yuri Temari, who has been placed under house arrest by the police. They plan to select the next God through a discussion among the six remaining candidates, though the intentions of the final unidentified candidate remain unclear.

Mirai and the remaining God candidates attempt to convene the final member through a live television broadcast. Their efforts are interrupted when Self-Defense Force helicopters arrive, escalating the tension. The last God candidate soon appears, drawing the situation to a head.

The initial gathering of the God candidates ends in conflict, leading to the formation of two opposing factions—one led by Mirai and the other by Yoneda, who is partnered with Muni, the Angel of Destruction. Hoshi, Yoneda's former classmate, shares a personal story with Mirai that sheds light on Yoneda's past. As Yoneda's character becomes clearer, a catastrophe occurs in heaven and the deadline for choosing a new god draws near.

Mirai's group and Yoneda prepare in secret for an impending confrontation. Yoneda reveals the time and location of the final showdown through the media, prompting Mirai and Saki to spend time together to mentally prepare. The decisive battle between the God candidates begins, leaving Yoneda's true intentions unclear.

The final confrontation takes place at the new national stadium, where Yoneda shares his vision for humanity's future and asks to speak privately with Mirai. As the others leave, Yoneda reveals his goal of preventing the next God's birth to protect his ideal future, and Mirai faces him with unwavering determination before the watching world.

As the White Arrow prepares to attack Mirai, Nasse undergoes a significant transformation that alters the battle's dynamics. With the situation shifting unpredictably, the prolonged conflict between the God candidates reaches its conclusion.

After God is selected and the world's memories of the process are erased, Professor Yoneda resumes his life with Temari as his lab assistant, while Mirai and Saki plan to open a flower shop together. Years later, God, having observed these developments, reaches a decision.
