Playmakers is an American television series that aired on ESPN from August 26, 2003, to November 11, 2003. The show followed the lives of the Cougars, a fictional professional football team based in an unnamed city. It starred Omar Gooding, Marcello Thedford, Christopher Wiehl, Jason Matthew Smith, Russell Hornsby, and Tony Denison. The series, which consisted of eleven episodes, marked ESPN's first original drama. Despite achieving high ratings for the network—Playmakers was the highest-rated show on ESPN outside of its Sunday night NFL and Saturday college football broadcasts—the series was ultimately canceled at the request of the National Football League, which felt that professional football was being portrayed in a negative light.
