Set in 1783 during a period of economic hardship in Britain marked by falling wages, rising prices, and civil unrest, the story follows Ross Poldark as he returns to Cornwall from the American War of Independence. He finds his homeland in disarray: his father has died, the family mine has been abandoned, his home is in ruins, and his sweetheart is about to marry his cousin. Despite these challenges, Ross discovers that hope and love can emerge unexpectedly amidst the rugged and beautiful Cornish landscape.
