When Earth becomes uninhabitable, the androids Mother and Father establish a new settlement and raise a family using human embryos on the planet Kepler-22b. Twelve years later, only one child, Campion, remains. The arrival of an ark carrying surviving humans, known as the Mithraic, poses a threat that Mother must confront.

Following a confrontation with Marcus, Mother discovers and brings five Mithraic children—Hunter, Tempest, Paul, Holly, and Vita—back to her settlement. As Mother, Father, and Campion adjust to life with the new group of Earth-born children, Marcus is left to struggle for survival alone on Kepler-22b.

After the Mithraic children fall ill, Campion grows convinced that Mother is poisoning them and begins planning an escape. As Mother and Father try to demonstrate that the illness is not deliberate, Marcus and Sue work to persuade the other remaining Mithraic members to organize a rescue mission for the children, driven by their desperation to recover their son, Paul.

The father attempts to teach the children how to hunt some of Kepler-22b’s mysterious creatures for food. At the same time, the Mithraic make a striking discovery that may fulfill a Mithraic prophecy, sparking a debate that leads to a conflict between Marcus and the Mithraic leader, Ambrose.

Marcus moves forward with a plan to rescue the Mithraic children, but first he has to find them. Back at the settlement, Campion and Paul bond while on a hunting expedition with Father, and Mother attempts to learn more about her origins.

After rekindling her connection to her creator, Mother becomes distracted by intense emotions she did not know she was capable of experiencing, unaware that Marcus, Sue, and the Mithraic are moving in on the settlement.

Marcus's decisions highlight his complex relationship with his family as he contends with the challenge of preserving his authority as the leader of the Mithraic. His mother is uniquely perceptive, seeing through his public persona to the person he truly is, a realization that undermines his power and places her in a dangerous position from which she may not recover. At the same time, Campion is confronted with a difficult decision that carries the potential for serious repercussions.

As Marcus becomes more deeply devoted to Mithraism, Sue begins to fear that he may no longer be acting in her and Paul's best interests. At the same time, Mother experiences what she interprets as malfunctions, while Hunter collaborates with Father on a confidential project.

Sue is determined to protect the children, but in the process, she faces uncertainty about whether she can trust Mother. At the same time, a new threat emerges, and Marcus's growing instability leads the Mithraic to doubt their leader.

Paul exhibits concerning behavior similar to Marcus, which leads to a shocking discovery. Father grapples with human-like emotions. Mother and Father uncover a startling secret about their planet just as a new threat arrives on Kepler-22b.

As Mother, Father, and the children encounter resistance from their new atheist community, Marcus endeavors to populate the walls of an ancient church with followers of Sol.

As the collective pursues the serpent, Mother grapples with complex emotions. Believing it will support his mission, Marcus seeks to locate the creature before the atheists can.

Marcus uses his newly acquired, enigmatic abilities to free a group of Mithraic prisoners. Meanwhile, Mother learns that the serpent is not a predator but an herbivore. To cope with his frustration over her decision to spare the serpent's life, Father immerses himself in his work on a project to restore an ancient android.

After the Trust uses Paul to retaliate against Marcus, Mother challenges the Trust and warns of a potential coup. At the same time, while evading Mother, Marcus struggles to maintain his followers' confidence as his abilities unexpectedly vanish.

As the mother fights to hold the collective together amid her challenges in leadership, Sue turns to prayer in her desperate attempt to find a cure for Paul. At the same time, Marcus and his followers gain renewed hope with the discovery of an ancient temple. However, while Marcus delves into the temple's mysteries, Decima and the rest of his followers are forced to confront the consequences of their sins.

As Sue and Paul struggle to open the seed box without success, they come to the realization that they need Marcus's assistance. Sue devises a plan to rescue Marcus from the brig while Mother is preoccupied with the approaching birth of Tempest's child. However, when Sue, Paul, and Marcus ultimately manage to open the seed box, they are met with a shocking and disturbing revelation.

Marcus and Paul, both reeling, join forces with Mother to disarm the newly weaponized serpent before it causes unimaginable havoc.

The grandmother reveals her own agenda, Marcus pursues revenge, and the mother attempts to neutralize the serpent—only to be overwhelmed by the consequences.
